OUR FOUNDER PRINCIPAL - Deshabandu Dr.(Mrs.) Wimala de SIlva

The achievements of our founder principal Deshabandu Wimala De Silva, and her service in the field of education can be best understood against her background. Her mother departed when she was 5 years. Her father P.A Jayathilake was a reputed Aurvedic Physician who followed the tradition of turning the sheaf of betel face down as he recieved it from the patient, so as not to see how much money it held. He took the lead in establishing a free Aurvedic clinik in Negombo. The medical students who studied under him were taught free of charge and were provided with food and lodging when required.

Wimala was the only daughter of this great Physician. She was born in 1920. Her elder brother was P.M. Jayathilake, a former principal of Ibbagamuwa Central College and Thurstan College, Colombo. Two of her aunts gave her the motherly love that she missed, and guidance for the Education.

Wimala had three years of primary education at Vidyodaya Buddhist Mixed School. in 1928 she joined Newstead Balika Vidyalaya, where its principal Miss.A.D. Dickson had direct influence in inculcating high values in the young girl. Jayathilake Wedamahaththaya saw to it that his daughter wore lama sariya to school at one stage of her schooling, and studied Sinhala and Pali in addition to Latin. In 1953, Wimala Jayathilake passed her Cambridge Senior exam with exemption.
