Proven to be an institution with a difference, Devi Balika Vidyalaya is dedicated to the vision of providing disciplined, educated, versatile and impeccable scholars. The school was founded as Government Girl’s College, Castle Street on 15^th January 1953 and Deshabandu Dr. (Mrs) Wimala De Silva was the founding principal who was a prominent Sri Lankan educationist. Since its establishment, enrolling 53 students selected by a placement system. Presently the students are admitted to Devi Balika Vidyalaya at Grade six based on the results of (an Island wide) Scholarship Examination.

Devi Balika Vidylaya has been a forerunner in the field of education and instrumental in obtaining the fully fledged rounded personalities. Today, Devi Balika Vidyalaya provides education for 35000 students. The academic staff consists of 127 Teachers and the number of Nonacademic staff is 36.

The school curriculum is successfully taught in both Sinhala medium and English medium. Students of Devi Balika Vidyalaya can follow one of the five major fields of study.

The administration of Devi Balika Vidyalaya as a leading school in the country, is shouldered by an efficient management headed by the principals. With the strongest basement of Deshabandu Wimala De Silva with her immense efforts in lifting Devi Balika Vidyalaya to a prestigious position, Mrs. Kalyani De Soysa was successful in creating a better ‘ Model School’, a school equals to the most prestigious girls’ schools in Sri Lanka. The Principal and the staff members worked as a team to achieve academic excellence by providing all rounded education.

Mrs. Jayanthi Pinnagoda was also succeeded in making the school, a centre of excellence in education and moral values. She guided the students to be courageous, responsible, brave and humble citizens of high caliber.

Mrs. Kalyani Lakshman was another vibrant example for her great achievements as a principal. A principal’s task is multifaceted. She worked hard for the overall development of the school. The curricular and co-curricular activities of students and the expansion and development of its infrastructure facilities. In a nutshell, She contributed to the development of school in all its aspects.

The current Principal Mrs. W.D.P.K. Samarasinghe as a principal who worked tirelessly even under extremely difficult circumstances, she was fully succeeded in developing the school in both academic and co-curricular and she vastly contributed to the physical development of school as well.  With her proper guidance, Devi Balika Vidyalaya has been proficient to fabricate three Island rankers in three streams in 2012 for the first time in the history of schools and public examinations in Sri Lanka.
